Have not thought about going to Sabarimala this time; I'm not allowed to meet my children; family has isolated me: Kanaka durga breaks down in an interview to BBC

Woman activist Kanaka Durga, who had managed to sneak in to Sabarimala temple during the last Mandalam season, along with her friend has said that, this time, she has not thought about going to the temple.

Kanaka Durga gave vent to her feelings in an interview given to BBC Tamil channel recently. “I have been left alone in my house. My husband and relatives have shifted to a rented house. They are not even allowing me to see my children,” she broke down while saying this.

“Now, I have no family. Ever since the Sabarimala incident, all have been hating me. On my return from Sabarimala, my mother-in-law beat me up and I had to seek treatment in hospital.

I came to know that my family had left the house only when I returned from Sabarimala.

I have permission to meet my children only on Saturdays and Sundays but after my husband divorced me, he got a stay on that order. Now he is not allowing me to meet my children. And, nowadays I don’t think about my children… I want my children to be with me. It is difficult to live in that house without them. I know that my children are not angry with me,” said Kanaka Durga, crying in between her statements.

Kanaka Durga says that her visit to Sabarimala was also a fight for women’s rights. “After me, hundreds of women had come forward, ready to visit Sabarimala but many backed off, seeing my plight.”

Kanaka Durga and her friend Bindu had visited Sabarimala early this year in the aftermath Supreme Court of September 28, allowing entry for women of all age groups.
