There is no doubt that actor Thilakan was one of the greatest actors of Malayalam films. In one stage, organisations of Malayalam films had banned him from acting. A dispute between Artistes organisation (AMMA) and Thilakan led to some controversies. Thilakan had turned against director and FEFKA general secretary B Unnikrishnan. Unnikrishnan clarified the stand taken on the controversies then to Straight Line, a programme of Kaumudy TV.
‘This is probably the first time I am talking about this in an interview. It was during the formation of FEFKA that Thilakan had some problems with AMMA. Thilakan stood with MACTA Federation. He then made a controversial statement against the directors of Malayalam films. Many senior directors called me and asked me how we should respond to it. A senior director said, Thilakan chettan is a versatile actor, but one thing has to be understood. All his dialogues were written and shot by us, many re-takes were taken. He should tender an apology and it is a matter of pride. They demanded peace if I am running a trade union.
Yet, no action was taken. Instead a general council of union bearers was convened. The 19 unions responded very emotionally. They decided not to cooperate unless he withdraws the statement. Shaji Kailas is the person behind Thilakan chettan's return. Shaji called me to inform that Thilakan chettan has been hospitalized. Our decisions should be re-examined. Shaji asked me to reinstate Thilakan chettan. An available executive meet was convened and decided to withdraw the ban on Thilakan chettan. Director Renjith was planning Indian Rupee that time. Renjith and Innocent Chettan, who were at a programme in Mumbai also said that he should be taken back, said Unnikrishnan.
