Idukki sexual assault survivor died while undergoing treatment for blazing herself

IDUKKI: The girl from Nariampara, Idukki, who attempted suicide by blazing herself after being subjected to brutal sexual assault succumbed on Saturday. The 17-year-old dalit girl passed away on Saturday early morning.

Manu Manoj, a native of Nariampara, who is an autorickshaw driver and also a DYFI worker is the accused in the case. Police have arrested him earlier and he was ousted from the party following the sexual assault case on him.

The family of the sexual assault survivor filed a police case citing sexual assault on October 22. A probe was started against the accused on the complaint after imposing charges under POCSO law. But, the girl attempted suicide, by setting herself on ablaze after pouring kerosene on herself.

The girl who suffered serious burns was initially admitted to a private hospital in Kattappana and later she was shifted to Kottayam Medical College. Later she was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram medical college for specialised treatment. But her health condition further worsened by Saturday early morning. After completing the procedures, her dead body will be taken to her home in Nariampara.
