Amendment to Police Act is not against freedom of media: CM gives explanation amidst harsh criticism

chief-minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The chief minister came forward with an explanation on the amendment to the Police Act implemented by the state government. The chief minister's criticism comes amid a controversy over the amendment. Along with the opposition and the BJP there were some from outside the state, who showered criticisms against the amendment. The main criticism was that the amendment to the Police Act was meant to confine the media in the name of preventing cyber-abuse. The provision of the amendment that the police could easily file a case against any media news regardless of who lodged the complaint, was of great concern. However, the amendment will not in any way be used against freedom of speech or impartial media activity. The chief minister said there is no basis for other concerns.

The new police law amendment will not be used against freedom of speech or impartial media activity. Concerns to the contrary are baseless.

The government has been receiving constant complaints on the abusive use of social media, especially some personal channels. Some of the complainants, including social and cultural figures have brought to the notice of the government examples of inhumane and vicious cyber-attacks carried out by some under the guise of journalism. Many families are victims of such attacks. It often turns out to be an attack and a crackdown on everything from lies to obscenities. Personal interests, political and non-political interests should not be allowed to be used for revenge in a way that disrupts the life of the family.

Cyber-attacks are creating terrible disasters in many places. Such attacks, which are carried out in defiance of what the victims have to say, are not media coverage but personal retaliation. The motive behind this evil is to make money.

In addition to media freedom, the government has the responsibility to protect individual’s freedom and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution. Individual freedom should not be compromised under the guise of media freedom.
