Cyclone wreaks havoc: three dead, more than 100 houses destroyed, roads washed away

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Although Cyclone Tauktae did not reach the coast of Kerala, its impact caused extensive damage in Kerala due to heavy rains, strong winds, and rough seas. Three people died in the state.

The deceased have been identified as Palkulangara native Anoop (32), Thirunelveli native Sounderrajan (56), and Vattavada native Raja (50). Anoop was electrocuted when he came in contact with a broken electric cable at Karamana. Sounderrajan also died of electric shock in Munnar Chithirapuram. Raja, a heart patient, died as his journey to the hospital got delayed because of a tree that fell on the road.

Kollam native Antappan (53), who went fishing in a lake in Ernakulam, went missing after his boat capsized in the lake last night. Subin (23), a native of Maruthurkulangara, who went missing on Friday while fishing in the Karunagapally Kozhikode lake, could not be found.

As many as 1500 families across the state were shifted to relief camps. Many are reluctant to go to camps for fear of COVID.

In Cheenthalar in Idukki, six people were injured when the roof of their house collapsed and three people were injured when a tree fell on their house. One person was injured when a tree fell on top of a jeep in Mankulam. A curfew has been imposed in Idukki district from 7 pm to 7 am. In Kollam, seven houses were completely destroyed and 146 houses were partially destroyed. A two-storeyed house was razed to the ground in Kasargod Moosodi.

Valiyathura pier, one of the oldest sea bridges in the state located here, developed a crack in the strong winds which hit the shores since last night.

Trees were widely uprooted and fell upon houses and vehicles, causing rampant destruction across the state. Some roads were washed away. There was also widespread destruction of crops. Power connections could not be restored in many areas. A tanker lorry parked at Angamaly crashed into the road. The roofs of the schools collapsed.


In Chellanam, seawater has entered in several houses. The NDRF team has reached the area. In Kottayam, 200 acres of paddy cultivation were destroyed.
