PALAKKAD: The Excise department has been directed to suspend 13 excise officers who helped the fake toddy production lobby in Wadakkanchery. Minister MV Govindan also directed that the investigation of the case should be handed over to the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Fake toddy and spirit were found on June 27 from a toddy godown at Anakapara in the Alathur range. The State Excise Enforcement Squad seized 1312 liters of spirits, 2220 liters of fake toddy, and Rs 11 lakh from a house in Wadakkancherry.

A subsequent search led by the Excise Vigilance Officer found a diary with monthly details, a computer statement showing the trial balance, cash books, and vouchers.

Upon examining these documents, it was found that the fake toddy lobby had connections with various excise officers for several years. Production of fake toddy had been going on in the area for several years with the knowledge of officials from the district level to the range level.
