Heavy rains in many parts of Kerala, alert issued from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode, strong winds likely

KOZHIKODE: Heavy rains lashed many parts of the state confirming the earlier weather forecast. Heavy rains are reported in the hilly areas of Kozhikode, Palakkad and Kottayam districts. It started raining heavily in the afternoon. Thiruvambadi town has been inundated due to heavy rains. No further casualties were reported. Isolated thundershowers are forecast for the next three hours. An alert has been issued from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode. The meteorological office said the winds could reach 40 kilometers per hour.

The Central Meteorological Department had warned of heavy rains in the southern states including Kerala for three days from today and heavy rains in the hilly districts due to the impact of east winds. The government had also announced strong preparations for the floods, fearing heavy rains could cause floods. The army and disaster relief force were deployed for the rescue operation. The government had also prepared fishermen to be deployed if required. But this morning the rain warning was changed. The Met Department forecast, there was no possibility for heavy rain in any district. An orange alert has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts tomorrow.
