MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has decided to allow the sale of wine at supermarkets and walk-in shops in the state, as part of the new wine policy.

The decision was taken to promote small-scale wine brands and fruit-based wineries, said Maharashtra skill development minister Nawab Malik. An increase in the sale of wines will provide additional income to the farmers and increase their profits. The Goods and Service Tax (GST) for 10 years has also been omitted. The supermarkets with a minimum area of 1000 sq. ft. or more shall be allowed to sell wine. The new move comes as part of the new wine policy in the state, said the minister.

Currently, wine in the state is produced from fruits, flowers and honey. With the new wine policy, wineries can directly sell their wines to the supermarkets. The decision is expected to benefit small wineries and farmers in the state.
