Govt intervening to calm Vizhinjam strike, ten acres for rehabilitation, people in camps will be shifted to rented houses

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government intervened decisively as the strike against the construction of Vizhinjam port intensifies. The cabinet sub-committee forwarded proposals for the rehabilitation of fishermen.


The cabinet sub-committee met after calling on the chief minister. Eight acres of the animal protection department in Muttathara and two acres of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation will be given for the rehabilitation of fishermen. The meeting also decided to hold talks with the strikers.

335 families living in camps will be considered first. They will soon be shifted to rented houses and the rent will be paid by the government. The sub-committee will meet again after receiving the report of departmental secretaries regarding the transfer of land.


A final decision on the transfer of land will be taken after talks with the chief minister. Ministers M V Govindan, Antony Raju, Ahmed Devarkovil, V Abdurahiman, K Rajan, Chinchu Rani and Mayor Arya Rajendran attended the talks.


Meantime, the protest led by the Latin Archdiocese has passed seven days. The fishermen have intensified their strike from today. The government is intervening at this point.
