NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has suspended the verdict of Bombay High court which acquitted professor JN Saibaba and five others in Maoist links case. The action is based on the fact that serious crimes have been charged against the accused.
The charges against Saibaba and the other accused is for challenging the society and the sovereignty of the country. The Supreme Court pointed out that they were punished after examining the evidence in detail. Saibaba, a former professor of Delhi University, is currently in Nagpur Central Jail.
The Gadchiroli Sessions Court of Maharashtra, which is the trial court, found Saibaba guilty in 2017. He was then sentenced to life imprisonment. In an appeal filed by Saibaba questioning this, a bench comprising Justice Rohit Deo and Justice Anil Pansare acquitted him yesterday. Then, the Maharashtra government filed appeal against the judgment of Bombay High Court Nagpur Bench that acquitted Saibaba and others.
