Won't resign over letter row, says Mayor Arya Rajendran; opposition protests continue in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Arya Rajendran, Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, has clarified that she will not resign over the letter controversy. The Mayor told the media that she will remain in office as long as she has the support of the councilors and the people. She said that she did not file the complaint for namesake and would cooperate with any investigation ordered by the court. The mayor also said that she will decide on the legal aspect of filing a defamation case against the 'suit case protest' of the Mahila Congress.

Meanwhile, for the fifth day in a row, the opposition staged a protest at the corporation over the letter controversy. UDF workers outside the corporation and UDF councillors inside are staging dharna. Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters after clashes broke out during the BJP march.

On Thursday, despite heavy police security around the Corporation office, the protestors jumped into the municipal premises and staged a protest. Congress and Mahila Congress workers gathered around the Corporation office. And when BJP councilors and Yuva Morcha workers came with protests, the street in front of the Corporation office came to a standstill. When the protest broke out, the police used water cannons and grenades, but the conflict did not subside. All this time, Mayor Arya Rajendran was inside her chambers at the Corporation office under heavy police security.

BJP councillors led by MR Gopan started a demonstration at the Corporation office while the police tried to stop the Mahila Congress workers from storming into the office. The attempt of the Mahila Congress workers to enter the office was stopped by the police. Meanwhile, the Congress MP and Mahila Congress state president Jebi Mather was beaten up by the police.

Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader Jebi Mather made abusive remarks against Mayor Arya Rajendran during the Mahila Congress protest. Jebi Mather arrived with a suitcase with a poster that reads 'katta panavumayi mayorukutty Kozhikkottekku vitto' (leave for Kozhikode with stolen money). After the incident became controversial, Jebi Mather explained it was not meant as her husband's place. Arya's husband Sachin Dev, MP of Balussery, hails from Kozhikode.
