Relaxation can be considered in draft buffer zone notification: SC

sc-

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a relief to Kerala, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said relaxation can be considered in the draft buffer zone notification. The court also informed that the petitions seeking clarification in the judgment will be considered together on Monday. The petitions were filed seeking relief from the judgment of the Supreme Court on June 3, 2022. Kerala was a party in the petition.

A bench headed by Justice BR Gavai heard the petitions. Senior advocate Jagadeep Gupta appeared for Kerala, and advocates Wills Mathew and VK Biju appeared for farmers' organizations were present in the court. After informing the court of the situation in Kerala, the Supreme Court verbally informed that it will consider the issue of excluding the wildlife sanctuaries included in the draft notification.

Thamarassery Diocese Bishop Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil responded that the observation of the court is comforting. "It gives hope that the struggles and hardships of the people have come under the observation of the court. It would only be helpful if the government took the opportunity to present the people's problems in the court", he said.

The Centre and Kerala are seeking relaxation in the ruling that a buffer zone of one-kilometre should be created around wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. The state government has stated in the application that people cannot be relocated due to excess population and lack of land availability. Based on the legal advice of senior advocates, Kerala applied to join the Centre's plea.

It has been pointed out in the petition that the outline of the buffer zone for 17 wildlife sanctuaries and six national parks in the state has been given to the central government, and if the decision is implemented, it will affect the Kerala High Court, which is only 200 meters away from the Mangalavanam bird sanctuary.
