ALAPPUZHA: Even though Onam celebrations have returned to its former glory, the sewing workers are so busy that they do not have time to step outside for a moment. This year's Onam was a reviving experience for the tailors who were broke during the Covid period.
The tailors say that they worked tirelessly to sew the clothes to be worn on the day of Thiruvonam. Customers came with clothes according to their bonus and salary. The orders came in at the same time, and the workers were left with no free time. In many tailoring centres, even temporary 'appointments' were made as part of Onam. The tailors say that despite the rush, there is happiness as orders for weddings in 'Chingam' (Malayalam month) keep pouring in.
Most of the orders are for sewing blouses in various designs like puff sleeves, wide neck, sleeveless etc. Along with the wedding season, the Onam programs have been held extensively this time, which is why the tailoring sector has received so much business. It was a busy time not only for the tailors in the shops but also for the housewives who did small sewing jobs at home.
Ready-made blouses are in demand just like blouses made after taking measurements. Orders for tailoring blouses in free size came in from textiles in large quantities. With readymade blouses, the long wait can be avoided and this was preferred by people including the students for the celebrations in the colleges. Even though 'Chingam' will be over within a week, orders for tailoring for weddings are still pouring into the shops.
