LEEDS: India took firm control on Day One of the first Test against England at Headingley with a strong batting display. Although England won the toss and chose to bowl first, the Indian batters handled the challenge comfortably and dominated the day.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal led India’s charge with a brilliant century, while debutant captain Shubman Gill marked his first match as skipper with an unbeaten 127. At stumps on Day One, India were strongly placed at 359 for 3. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant also remained unbeaten on 65, contributing to the team’s dominant position.
Earlier in the day, Jaiswal and KL Rahul stitched together a solid opening stand of 91 runs. Rahul, who scored 42, was the first to depart, caught by Joe Root off the bowling of Brydon Carse. Debutant Sai Sudharsan followed soon after, dismissed for a low score by Ben Stokes, with wicketkeeper Jamie Smith taking the catch.
Jaiswal then partnered with Gill to build a steady innings, bringing up his century shortly after the tea break. However, his innings came to an end on 101 when he was bowled by Stokes. Gill then combined with Pant to add an impressive 138-run partnership, keeping India in complete command at the close of play.
For England, captain Ben Stokes was the most successful bowler, claiming two wickets for 43 runs, while Carse picked up one wicket, conceding 70 runs.
