MUMBAI: The Indian cricket team for the series against England starting on Wednesday and the Champions Trophy to be held in February has been selected. Karun Nair, who has been performing brilliantly in domestic cricket, was not included in the Champions Trophy led by Rohit Sharma, England ODI team and Suryakumar Yadav-led England T20 team.
Many were surprised that Karun was not included in the team despite his great performance in domestic tournament. However, now legendary player and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has clarified why Karun was not included. 'Where will the selectors give Karun a place in the team? He can take the place of K L Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. Rahul is the second wicketkeeper and batsman. He performed well in the 2023 World Cup. Since then, India has not played many ODIs. Shreyas has also performed well in the format. That's why Karun was not selected,' clarified Gavaskar.
However, if his current form continues, the 33-year-old Karun cannot be ignored in the upcoming England Test series, said Gavaskar. 'If he continues his brilliant form in the Ranji Trophy, it will be difficult not to pick him for India's England Test series this year.'
Karun Nair scored 779 runs in eight innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic ODI format series. Even Sachin Tendulkar praised Karun's performance as the Vidarbha captain.
