WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced a new equation for India-US bilateral relations. Modi introduced the new equation during a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump. The equation was MAGA + MIGA = MEGA. Modi said that if Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) and India's 'Make India Great Again' (MIGA) are combined, it will become a MEGA partnership. Modi and Trump announced in a press conference that they are targeting a bilateral trade of $500 billion between India and the US by 2030.
Meantime, Trump said India is the country with the highest import tariffs. Trump also said that India is not a friendly country for business. Modi said that they will move forward together for the progress and prosperity of both countries. The meeting with Modi and Trump took place at the White House. Both spoke highly of each other during the joint press conference.
The meeting between Trump and Modi saw important announcements in the areas of trade and diplomacy. Trump has stated that Mumbai terror attack mastermind Tahawar Rana will be extradited to India soon, and an agreement has also been reached to buy more fuel from the United States. However, Trump is not ready to make concessions in the negotiations and tax decisions with India. Trump has announced that all countries that impose tariffs on the United States will be subject to the same tariffs. Trump, who said that allies are worse than enemies in terms of trade, also asked India to reduce import tariffs. Modi said that India and the US are moving forward together in the areas of development, production and technology transfer. To ensure India's energy security, oil and gas trade will be strengthened. Modi also stated that India has decided to expand cooperation in the nuclear energy sector.
