Toll rises in Kuwait toxic liquor tragedy, 160 under treatment

KUWAIT CITY: The death toll in Kuwait's toxic alcohol tragedy has risen to 23. 160 have been hospitalized. Most of them are hinted to be Indians. Reports say that at least six Malayalees, including a native of Kannur, are among the dead. The authorities have imposed strict restrictions in releasing the names of the dead.

31 people are presently being kept alive with the help of ventilators. 51 people have been subjected to dialysis. The Kuwaiti Ministry of Health said that 21 people have lost their sight partially or completely. The Kuwaiti government has declared a state of high alert across the country.


Kuwaiti authorities have also appealed to the public to report any suspected cases of poisoning. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait confirmed that around 40 Indian nationals have been hospitalized. The condition of some of them is critical while others are recovering.


The body of P Sachin (31) of Irinave in Kannur, will be taken home tomorrow. Sachin reached Kuwait four years ago. The embassy said that family members of those affected by the disaster can contact the helpline number +96565501587 via WhatsApp or directly.
