PYONGYANG: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, on Wednesday morning on his first official visit to the East Asian nation in 24 years. Putin was received with a hug at the airport by his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong Un.

Putin's visit to North Korea comes at a time when both countries are facing isolation at the international level. Russia is facing international sanctions after its invasion of Ukraine. Political observers believe that Putin is now trying to find new friendships with politically isolated countries such as North Korea.

The streets of Pyongyang were decorated with Russian flags and posters of Vladimir Putin ahead of his early Wednesday morning arrival, his first visit to North Korea since 2000. A red carpet was rolled out to welcome the Russian President at the airport. Posters reading, 'Friendship between North Korea and Russia are immortal' were put up across the city.

It is indicated that Putin would discuss various matters with Kim Jong Un during his visit to North Korea and that the two countries will sign some crucial agreements. It also includes agreements to cement future cooperation on security issues, Kremlin spokesman Yuri Ushakov said. Experts also suggest that the visit will focus on strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries.
