HYDERABAD: For those seeking a departure from the predictable luxury of high-end resorts and boutique stays, a new "lifestyle" experience has emerged in the heart of the city. As of April 28, 2026, the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA) in Chanchalguda has officially opened its doors to the public, offering a stay that promises total digital detoxification and a gruelling, yet eye-opening, routine.

Known as the "One Day Jail Experience," or more colloquially, "Feel the Jail," this initiative allows visitors to swap their designer wardrobes for khadi uniforms and their smartphones for a chance to reflect behind bars.

Itinerary: 24 hours of Discipline

This is not a themed hotel; it is a meticulously recreated prison environment designed to provide a realistic glimpse into the life of an inmate.

  • Check-In: Upon payment of a Rs 500 fee, participants must surrender all personal belongings, including watches and mobile phones.
  • Uniform: Guests are issued a set of coarse prison clothes and basic utensils.
  • Routine: The stay follows a strict schedule:
    • 06:00 AM: Wake-up call and barrack cleaning.
    • 06:30 AM: Morning tea followed by physical labour, such as gardening or sapling plantation.
    • Meals: Authentic "Jail Ka Khana"—typically rice, dal, and curry—served in the same fashion as the prison population.
    • 09:00 PM: "Lights out" in a shared barrack environment.

Heritage pivot

The program marks a significant relocation from its original 2016 home at the Sangareddy Heritage Jail. Due to the ageing structure of the Sangareddy site, the Telangana Prisons Department moved the experience to the Chanchalguda Central Jail campus.

The new facility also houses a comprehensive Jail Museum. Visitors not opting for the overnight stay can explore:

  • The Nizam Era: Original shackles, fetters, and heavy chains dating back to the 18th century.
  • Correctional Evolution: Displays showcasing the transition from punitive torture to modern rehabilitation and skill development.
  • Inmate Artistry: A gallery dedicated to handlooms, furniture, and agricultural products crafted by current prisoners.

"Early release" penalty

The experience is intentionally designed to be sobering. Prison officials noted that during the program's tenure in Sangareddy, nearly 30% of participants requested early release due to the psychological weight of the isolation. To discourage a casual attitude, those who cannot complete the full 24-hour cycle may face an additional "fine" or fee upon exit.

"The goal is awareness, not entertainment. It serves as a deterrent by illustrating the true value of freedom and the stark reality of life behind bars." — Telangana Prisons Department Statement.

For the modern traveller looking to disconnect from the noise of the 21st century, Chanchalguda offers the ultimate "unfiltered" stay—where the only thing on the menu is perspective.
