'I don't get any films anymore; I lived in a copra field with no one to look after me': Actress Beena Kumbalangi opens up

Beena Kumbalangi is an actress who once became well-known to Malayalis through small comedy roles. Her role as Bhavani in the film Kalyanaraman made Beena more notable. Beena has been undergoing treatment for cancer for the past few years. Beena has been speaking openly about the mental difficulties she faced during her illness. In an interview granted to a YouTube channel, she shared some of her experiences.

'My sister had some problems taking care of me. So, despite being ill, I went to a copra field near my house for a few days. Actress Seema G. Nair came to know about that information. She was the one who brought me to an orphanage. So I went to the police station and filed a complaint. Seema was the one who stayed with me in that situation. No one in the film industry had enquired about my condition. I would talk to her when I see her. I was not close to anyone else.

My brother had given me some land. The Amma organisation had built a house for me in it. After learning about my husband's death, Edavela Babu came to see me. I was living in a rented house at that time. At first, they all thought that I was living well. They gave me a house after understanding my situation. I came to the cinema to look after my family. Still, I had to suffer a lot of mental pain from my close relatives.

I became a liability to everyone. When I was in the hospital for surgery, many people gave me money. However, I didn't get it. There were similar situations where I didn't get money after acting in films. Even though they said they would give it, I didn't get it. I didn't have the courage to respond at that time. I would sit on the set for a while and cry and then come back. It's been twenty years since I acted. No one calls me to act anymore,' said Beena.
