Actress Ranya Rao fined Rs 102 crore for smuggling one kilo of gold

BENGALURU: The revenue intelligence imposed a fine of Rs 102 crore on actress Ranya Rao, arrested for smuggling gold worth crores after hiding it in her clothes and belt. The main accused in the case is Ranya, adopted daughter of DGP Ramachandra Rao. Three others were also fined along with her.

Ranya was caught with gold worth Rs 12.56 crore in March. She was caught while trying to bypass the security check at the airport with a police escort. The gold was found from her clothes in a search. Currency worth Rs 2.06 crore and gold worth Rs 2.67 crore were seized from Ranya's house.

Ranya, who worked as a gold smuggler, had gone to Dubai thirty times in a year. All these were to smuggle gold. She received Rs 1 lakh as commission for smuggling one kilo of gold. Ranya received lakhs as remuneration for each trip. Using the influence of being the adopted daughter of the DGP and the police security, she was able to come out without an examination and this helped her in the smuggling.
