NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh is the state where the BJP suffered the most setbacks in North India. In Varanasi, the vote majority of candidates including Prime Minister Narendra Modi's, fell sharply and many prominent figures lost. Smriti Irani, who beat Rahul Gandhi last time in Amethi, is prominent in it. Smriti Irani, who challenged Rahul to contest in Amethi, faced a huge defeat.

Kishori Lal Sharma, who replaced Rahul, defeated Smriti Irani by a margin of more than 100,000 votes. Kishori Lal Sharma, a confidant of the Gandhi family, entered the battle when it was thought that either Rahul or Priyanka would be the candidate. The BJP mocked Kishori Lal, who is only a local leader, as a weak candidate but his response was that he is the strongest candidate. He also shared the hope that he will win easily as he has a close relationship with the people.

Youth Congress activist Kishori Lal came to Amethi 40 years after Rajiv Gandhi chose him to oversee development work in his constituency in 1983. He was appointed as the in-charge of the Tiloi assembly constituency under Amethi Lok Sabha constituency. After Rajiv Gandhi's death in 1991, he became a full-time worker for the Congress in Amethi. In 1999, Kishori Lal played a crucial role in the first election victory with Soni Gandhi. In 2004, Sonia Gandhi shifted to Raebareli when Rahul Gandhi chose Amethi for his political entry. Even then Kishori Lal worked for both the constituencies.
