NEW DELHI: Despite being Pakistan’s close ally, China supported India’s stance on cross-border terrorism at the Tianjin Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
China condemned the Pahalgam terror attack at the summit, which was also attended by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. China has long opposed India's arguments in international forums. The resolution adopted by the SCO demanded that those who carry out and support terrorist attacks be brought to justice.
The declaration condemned all forms of terrorism. It also called for combating cross-border terrorism. It recognised the sovereignty of nations in combating terrorism. Kyrgyzstan assumed the chairmanship of the SCO. The resolution mentions that, along with fighting terrorism and separatism, it will also oppose the use of 'mercenaries' to carry out such acts. This is seen as a reference to Pakistan.
In his speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there should be no double standards in combating terrorism. Modi thanked the member states for condemning the Pahalgam terror attack.
"Resolute action is needed to combat terrorism in all its forms. Coordinated action is needed to stop terror financing. The SCO must take the lead in confronting countries that support and facilitate cross-border terrorism. Peace, security and stability are the basis of progress and prosperity. India is committed to strengthening cooperation under the SCO framework."
The Prime Minister thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for the successful organisation of the summit and his hospitality.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, China, returned in the same vehicle. They went to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, where they had scheduled a meeting. Despite the car reaching the front of the hotel, both leaders remained inside and continued with the discussion for another 50 minutes.
Then a discussion was held at the hotel, which was also attended by diplomatic officials. Modi demanded that steps be taken to end the conflict in Ukraine and let peace prevail. PM Modi shared a photo along with Putin on X.
