Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passes away

NEW DELHI: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shibu Soren has passed away at the age of 81. He had been undergoing treatment for the past month at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. Soren was admitted to the hospital towards the end of June due to kidney-related ailments. The news of his death was announced by his son, Hemant Soren, who is the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

Known as ‘Dishom Guru’ (The Great Leader), Shibu Soren was one of the prominent figures in Indian politics. He served three terms as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand and was also elected as a Union Minister. A powerful tribal leader, Soren led his party for over four decades. He assumed leadership of the party in 1987 and continued as its president until April 2024. He was elected to the Lok Sabha six times and to the Rajya Sabha three times.
