SRINAGAR: A heated controversy has emerged over the organisation of a fashion show in Kashmir during Ramadan. The issue has sparked widespread debate, with religious groups, political organisations, and celebrities expressing both support and opposition.
The show was held in Gulmarg on Sunday. Videos of the fashion show were widely circulated on social media. As the controversy intensified, the organisers removed the semi-nude pictures and videos from Instagram.
After criticism arose that it was a government event, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah came forward to clarify. Omar explained that it was a completely private event and the government had no role in it. Omar said that the people's protests against the semi-nude show during the month of Ramadan were justified. An inquiry has been announced, and the police have been instructed to submit a report within 24 hours. The incident also sparked a heated debate in the Assembly yesterday.
Muslim religious scholars have criticised the models for wearing bikinis to participate in the event, saying that it has damaged the cultural values of the state. At the same time, the counterargument that it was a grand display of culture and fashion and that religiousization was a vested interest is also strong.
Outdoor show in snow
The outdoor event was held at the Gulmarg ski resort. It was organised as part of the 15th anniversary of the design firm SHIVAN & NARRESH. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) also participated. Renowned fashion designer Varun Bahl led the show. Celebrities, including Bollywood star Huma Qureshi, participated in the show. The ramp was set up in snow. About thirty male and female models participated.
