MADURAI: One of the names that was heard for the post of General Secretary since the flag was hoisted for the 24th Party Congress was that of M.A. Baby. Kerala comrades flocked to Tamukkam from the second day, driven by enthusiasm for another Malayali leader reaching the top post. As the last day approached, all the vacant spaces on the ground in the convention city were filled with Kerala vehicles. Since hotel rooms had been booked in advance for the delegates, the workers from Kerala were facing difficulty in finding a place to stay. Still, they continued to stay in Madurai, sitting in their vehicles, chatting and having fun. There was only one question: will M.A. Baby become selected?
Baby responded with his usual smile and calm to those who excitedly came before him. In the meantime, rumours spread that there would be an election for the post of General Secretary.
Since yesterday morning, the convention city of the party congress has been transformed into a festival ground. Although barricades were erected in front of the hall to facilitate the passage of delegates to the convention hall, volunteers had to work hard to control the crowd.
Although it was thought that the convention proceedings would be completed before noon, the matter was delayed when the voting for the central committee came. Media waited while workers sang revolutionary songs. False news of Baby’s appointment briefly sparked celebrations before disappointment set in.
Around 2:30 PM, confirmation of Baby’s election triggered jubilation. Supporters rushed to the hall with banners. Despite the heat, they chanted slogans, celebrating their leader’s rise.
