KOLKATA: Three have been arrested for gangraping a law student in south Kolkata. The incident happened on Wednesday night in Kasba. The girl was gangraped in the campus of South Calcutta Law College. First year students Zaib Ahmed (19), Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) and Manojit Mishra (31), former student of the college have been arrested. They were produced in the court and remanded.
Police said the victim’s family have filed a complaint and that she will be subjected to a medical examination. Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim termed the incident as serious. This incident comes 10 months after the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College.
The woman told police that the accused had recorded a video of her being raped and threatened to spread the clips if she fails to cooperate. When she tried to escape, the accused beat her with a hockey stick and injured her. Some people on social media have alleged that Manojit Mishra, the main accused in the case, was the former president of the Trinamool Congress Youth Wing at Law College. He is presently a lawyer. The BJP came forward condemning the incident. BJP leader Amit Malviya said that it was horrific.
