NEW DELHI: The Congress has called for a nationwide protest against the central government's move to bring the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act in place of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced that a nationwide protest and campaign will start from January 5 demanding the withdrawal of the law. The decision was taken at a Congress Working Committee meeting held in Delhi. The resolution was also passed.
Kharge said that the people are angry and the Modi government will have to face big consequences. “The actions of the Centre are unilateral. There was no discussion with the state governments or panchayats. The states will have additional financial responsibility. The new law is destroying the poor. This is to help Adani and Ambani. The Congress will fight against this in Parliament and on the streets. The Modi government hates not only the Gandhi family but also Mahatma Gandhi,” Kharge said.
The SIR process in nine states including Kerala, the violence against the Christian community during Christmas, the situation in Bangladesh, etc. were discussed in the working meeting. Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal, Shashi Tharoor MP and others participated.
Like demonetization
Rahul Gandhi said that the VB-G RAM G Act was like demonetization. “The opposition will unite in the protest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has just broken the law named after Mahatma Gandhi. It is a one-man show. He did not even consult the cabinet or the minister. It is a direct attack on the federal system of the country. We will fight against this with all our might,” Rahul said.
