New criminal law comes into effect in country, first case registered against street vendor

NEW DELHI: The new laws introduced by the central government instead of the important laws from the British rule have started implementing in the country. Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act have been replaced by Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The first case was registered at Kamala Market Police Station in Delhi.

The first case was registered against a street vendor for obstructing a road near the New Delhi railway station under Section 285 of the new criminal code. His business was at New Delhi railway station. Ahead of the implementation of the new law, posters announcing the law were put up in the streets, police stations and places where people gather.


The new laws were passed by the second Modi government. Considering the recommendations of the parliamentary committee, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the amended bills in the Lok Sabha on December 12, 2023. The central government announced that the three new criminal laws are taking into account the social realities and crimes of the changing times. The Center also clarified that laws should be made on the basis of the ideas upheld by the Constitution. Amit Shah responded that the body and soul of the laws are completely Indian.
