Operation Aakraman: Indian Air Force conducts aerial drills; Pakistan closes airspace for Indian airlines

NEW DELHI: India has initiated high-intensity aerial exercises involving fighter jets like Rafale and Sukhoi in the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. As tensions between the two nations continue to escalate, Pakistan is reportedly alarmed by India’s growing military response.

The exercise, named Operation Aakraman, features participation from Rafale and Sukhoi-30 fighter jets. The Rafale aircraft were deployed from the Ambala and Hashimara airbases. These drills focus on testing and demonstrating the air force's capabilities in complex scenarios, including ground assaults and electronic warfare.

Amid fears of retaliation, Pakistan has reportedly decided to deny airspace access to Indian-owned aircraft. The Pakistani government has taken the decision to close its airspace to Indian flights — a move reminiscent of its response after the 2019 Pulwama attack.

India's retaliation is not limited to border closures, visa restrictions for Pakistani citizens, or the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan fears further countermeasures from India. In fact, growing concerns over a potential cross-border strike by India are believed to have prompted Pakistan's National Security Committee to convene an emergency meeting.
