NEW DELHI: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has come forward with the question on where India will store all this water after suspending the Indus Water Treaty. He said that whatever decision the central government takes in this regard, we will support it. Asaduddin shared his concerns while talking to the media after attending an all-party meeting convened by the central government in New Delhi. He added that international law has given India the right to respond strongly to the Pahalgam attack.
‘Suspending the Indus Water Treaty temporarily is a very good thing. This is not a political issue. We will support whatever decision the central government takes. The central government can take action against a country that provides shelter to terrorist groups. International law allows us to impose air and naval blockade against Pakistan for self-defense and to stop supplying arms to it,’ Owaisi said. He also clarified that the terrorists were targeting deep-rooted communalism by shooting and killing tourists after asking their religion.
Owaisi also responded to the security lapse in Pahalgam. Why was the CRPF not deployed at the Baisaran meadow? Why did the quick reaction team take an hour to reach there?
The Indus Water Treaty is a water-sharing agreement between India and Pakistan. The agreement was signed in September 1960 between the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistani President Ayub Khan under the mediation of the World Bank. The agreement came into effect after nine years of negotiations. According to the agreement, Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab - the western rivers are for Pakistan. Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej - the eastern rivers for India. Its waters are equally important between India and Pakistan.
India's move to freeze the Indus Water Treaty will really shake Pakistan's economy. If India does not warn, the flood in the river will be like a water bomb and cause great damage in Pakistan. The Indus River originates in the Tibetan region and flows into Pakistan through India. Pakistan is a country that is so dependent on the Indus River basin.
Irrigation, agriculture, electricity, etc will be suffocated. The Punjab province depends on the Indus and its tributaries for irrigation. It produces 85 percent of Pakistan's agricultural products and crops.
