Reports say that 294 people have died in the disaster. 265 bodies have been recovered. The plane crashed on top of the medical college hostel building near the airport. Some students there also died in the accident.
Many of the bodies are charred beyond recognition. The Gujarat government has therefore asked the relatives of the victims to immediately provide DNA samples. Two hundred samples have been received so far.
The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained. The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had said in a press release that the cause of the accident was suspected to be a bird strike on both the engines of the aircraft.
