AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site of the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash that killed many in Ahmedabad yesterday. He visited the crash site Friday morning. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Bhai Patel, Air India CEO and officials investigating the accident accompanied the Prime Minister.

After visiting the crash site, Modi also visited the hospitals where the injured are being treated. He consoled the injured and their relatives. He also met the lone survivor of the crash, Indian origin British national Ramesh Vishwas at the hospital. It is reported that a high-level meeting will be held in Modi's presence. After this, he will also meet Anjali Rupani, wife of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who died in the plane crash.

Reports say that 294 people have died in the disaster. 265 bodies have been recovered. The plane crashed on top of the medical college hostel building near the airport. Some students there also died in the accident.

Many of the bodies are charred beyond recognition. The Gujarat government has therefore asked the relatives of the victims to immediately provide DNA samples. Two hundred samples have been received so far.

The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained. The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had said in a press release that the cause of the accident was suspected to be a bird strike on both the engines of the aircraft. A special squad of the NDRF has started searching the site. One of the black boxes of the aircraft has been recovered. The search for the second one is ongoing.
