SINGAPORE: Renowned Bollywood singer and actor Zubeen Garg has passed away. He was pulled out of the sea and rushed to the shore after the freak scuba diving accident in Singapore. Zubeen was given basic treatment before being taken to the Singapore General Hospital, but could not be saved. The incident took place at around 2.30 pm Indian time. The singer was 52 years old. The accident occurred when he was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival 2025 on Saturday.
Doctors announced his death at 5.14 pm Singapore time. Zubeen Garg hails from Assam. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that talks are underway with the Indian High Commissioner to bring his body to Assam as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his condolence message on X, said that Zubeen Garg's death was shocking and that he will always be remembered for his rich contribution to Indian music. The Prime Minister said that he shares the grief of his family.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said that Zubeen Garg's death is a terrible tragedy, and his voice defined a generation. "He overcame personal tragedies to reshape the landscape of Assamese music. His perseverance and courage have left an enduring mark," Rahul Gandhi wrote. Zubeen Garg's film career spanning two decades includes songs like Dil Tu Hi Bataa from Krrish 3 and Ya Ali from Gangster.
