
KANPUR: An umpire lost his life in an attack by a swarm of bees during a cricket match. Several including another umpire sustained injuries. The incident happened during an under-13 match in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur. The dead is 65-year-old Manik Gupta, a senior empire of the Kanpur Cricket Association (KCA).
A swarm of bees attacked the spectators and players while the match was going on. Some were stung, causing the players and others to flee. Meanwhile, Manik Gupta fell and sustained serious injuries. He was stung by the bees. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but as his condition was critical, he was taken to another hospital. However, by the time they reached there, the doctors declared him dead. Another umpire identified as Jagdish Sharma was also injured but is out of danger. The others injured are out of danger.
Manik Gupta is a well-known umpire in the state. He has been working in this field for more than thirty years. He has been an umpire in many notable regional matches. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
In a similar incident in 2019, a one-day cricket match between India A and England Lions at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram had to be halted after bees attacked individuals at the stadium. Several people were stung then but there were no casualties.
