PATHANAMTHITTA: An ASHA worker set ablaze by wife of a cop has died. Latha Kumari (61) of Keezhuvaipur in Pathanamthitta, who was undergoing treatment for burns, died last night at the Kottayam Medical College. She sustained burns while foiling a robbery attempt.


The incident happened on October 9. Her statement while undergoing treatment in the hospital stated that she sustained burns while foiling a robbery attempt. Her statement was that Sumyya, wife of a policeman staying in nearby quarters, barged into the house and set her ablaze.

Sumayya had asked her gold ornaments to pledge. Latha Kumari told police that Sumayya had a grudge towards her for not giving the gold. Sumayya stole her ornaments including a chain and bangles, said her statement. The police had arrested Sumayya in the case. Sumayya told police that the theft was to cover the losses incurred in stock trading.
