KOCHI: A remand prisoner broke the hands of assistant prison officers in anger after being asked to enter his cell. The injured are Rijumon (31), a native of Mararikulam in Alappuzha, and Binu Narayanan (32), a native of Airapuram in Ernakulam, both officers of Mattancherry Sub-Jail. Based on Rijumon's complaint, the Mattancherry police have registered a case against Tansir Ahmed (25), a native of Panayappally in Mattancherry. Both of them had their right hands fractured. Tansir was shifted to the high-security cell in Viyyur jail.

The incident took place at 7.30 am on Tuesday. When Tansir remained outside even after the time allowed for prisoners to bathe and eat in the morning, Rijumon and Binu asked him to go to his cell. This angered Tansir. A verbal argument ensued. Tansir attacked the officers by taking the metal lid of a large container that was used to store drinking water. Tansir hit Rijumon on the right hand and grabbed Binu's hand and twisted it. More officers arrived and forced Tansir to submit. Tansir also threatened to kill Rijumon and Binu if he was released on bail.

Tansir was remanded in a case of assaulting a civil police officer at the Harbour Station. There is also a suspicion that he deliberately unleashed violence with the aim of getting a prison transfer. Mattancherry Police will again apply to the court for permission to record the arrest of the remanded accused.
