THRISSUR: More information surface in the incident where a youth congress leader V S Sujith was brutally assaulted by cops of Kunnamkulam police station. He revealed that money was offered to him for not revealing the custodial torture. Sujith said the police had offered him and local leader Varghese Chovannoor an amount of Rs 20 lakh.
Sujith said that an officer named Zuhair, who was driving the police jeep on the day of the incident, also assaulted him. No case has been filed against him yet. When offered money, the officers turned away when he said that he would see him through legal means. Zuhair is now working in the revenue department. Sujith demanded action against all five who assaulted him.
Action has presently been taken against sub inspector Nuhman and CPOs Saseendran, Sandeep and Sajeevan. There are also allegations that only minor sections have been charged against them. Even though the visuals of the assault had emerged, the accused have been charged with only a charge that can lead to a year in prison. The CCTV footage of Sujith being assaulted beaten was released after a two-year legal battle.
The police have received legal advice that they cannot be punished twice in the incident. The promotion of all four policemen has been stopped for three years. The increment has been stopped for two years. Therefore, the police have received legal advice that no further departmental action is possible. The legal advice received is that further action will be as per the court’s decision.
