Suicide of woman over dowry harassment and figure; family explicitly blames husband

MALAPPURAM: A woman's family has alleged domestic violence in the incident where a woman was found hanging in her husband's house in Elankur. They explicitly blamed her husband and her family for her death. The dead was Vishnuja of Pookkottumpadam. She was found hanging in the house of her husband Prabhin of Elankur, last Thursday.

Vishnuja and Prabhin got married in May 2023. Prabhin is a staff nurse at Manjeri Medical College. The woman's family alleged that Prabhin constantly harassed her saying that she has no job, that she is not beautiful and that the dowry given was less. They also alleged that his family supported him in it. The family also said that there were injuries on her body.

'A week after their marriage, Prabhin told her to find a job. She was trying hard to get a job. Prabhin would not even take her on his bike, saying that she is not beautiful and that she is thin. The two had not gone anywhere after marriage,' said Vishnuja's father Vasudevan.

Her family demanded action against Prabhin and his family. Manjeri police had registered a case of unnatural death in the incident. A special team led by the DySP is investigating the case. The statements of the woman's family have been recorded.
