744 criminal case accused in police force, govt fails to take action

kk

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who is in charge of Home department had earlier stated that the deeds of some police officers tarnish the reputation of the force. The plight intensifies when such officers continue in the force with political protection.

As per the latest details submitted in the Legislative Assembly, there are 744 criminal case accused in the police force. 18 convicted persons have been dismissed. 691 officers are under departmental investigation. These criminals, who are not even one and a half per cent, are tarnishing the reputation of police force with 60,000 officers.

Among these are the accused involved in cases like abuse of children and women, sexual harassment, custodial death and dowry harassment. 65 police officers are accused in sexual harassment cases. There is another list of 59 officers prepared by the Home Department who are accused of serious crimes.

Although CM keeps repeating that such officers will be expelled from force, the punishment is usually limited to simple measures like suspension, good conduct and transfer. After six-month suspension, they can return to the force. Law and order charge was not given to such people before. Now such a precaution is not even there. The Intelligence Review is also not considered now.

As per our system it takes 15 years to complete the departmental investigation against an SI. By that time, he will be a DYSP. A clean report will be ready by the time of retirement. Rs 250 reduction in pension will be the 'severe punishment'.

Intelligence chief TK Vinod Kumar said that the police officers have illicit relations with gangsters and mafias.
