MALAPPURAM: Another crack in the road appeared on the Thalappara side of the National Highway in Malappuram. The crack occurred on the six-lane road on Tuesday morning. Following the findings, the traffic has been diverted in the area.
The vehicle is being diverted via the service road. The crack has now appeared four kilometres away from Kooriyad, where a section of the national highway collapsed the other day. Tirurangadi police have reached the spot.
Traffic will be suspended on this route until the National Highways Authority and experts arrive at the location for inspection. Locals alleged that the crack was caused by the shifting of soil at the base of the road, which was built near the field.
The other day, a six-lane national highway under construction in the Kooriyad area of Malappuram collapsed onto the service road. Four cars were damaged while the passengers escaped luckily with minor injuries.
Eight people, including children in two cars, were injured. The road collapsed about half a kilometre between Kooriyad and Kolappuram on the Kozhikode-Thrissur National Highway. The accident occurred at around 2:30 pm on Monday. A major tragedy was averted as there was less traffic in the area at the time.
A section of the service road, which was built by filling in a field, collapsed first. After that, the side wall of the national highway and the ground collapsed onto the service road. Huge concrete blocks fell upon the car, damaging it completely.
