Assembly elections approaching; license will not be revoked for five motor vehicle rule violations

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The central amendment to cancel the licenses of those who violate traffic laws five times will not be implemented in Kerala soon. The retreat is based on the conclusion that it will backfire in the context of the approaching assembly elections. Transport Minister K.B. Ganeshkumar informed that the central amendment will be implemented in the state only after consultation.

"The central amendment will be implemented in a way that does not cause difficulties for the common man. Only by making the law stricter will accidents be reduced. However, many central laws will not be implemented as they are. Action should be taken only after studying and discussing how the central motor vehicle law amendments can be simplified. This will be discussed with the transport commissioner," the minister clarified.

MVD to offer discount for arrears

The Motor Vehicles Department is considering giving a special discount to vehicle owners for paying challans. Most people do not pay challans because the amount of several challans adds up. The MVD believes that vehicle owners will pay the challans if the amount is reduced through a one-time settlement or other options.

According to the amended Motor Vehicle Act, all services related to Vahan and Sarathi can be blocked if the challans are in arrears. Only taxes can be paid. The vehicle's insurance and pollution test cannot be done. If the court is convinced that the vehicle needs to be seized, that can also be done. The amendment has been made by revising the provision that the vehicle can be seized if the insurance and taxes are not paid, so that it can be done even if the challans are not paid.
