Bird flu: Health department issues warning to contain outbreak

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With bird flu detected in the state, the health department has issued a warning in order to contain the virus. Minister Veena George informed that the districts have been alerted in this regard.

Special surveillance has been launched for fever and other symptoms in affected areas. People in these areas should seek medical attention if they develop respiratory problems.

The health department suggested that if the birds die or get sick, people should immediately inform the animal welfare department or local authorities and those who are in close contact with the sick birds should contact the health workers to take preventive pills.

  • Severe body pain
  • Fever, cough, cold
  • Obstruction of breathing
  • Bloody sputum

Precaution

Those handling birds with a suspected infection should wear gloves and masks and wash their hands frequently with soap and water. Eat only well-cooked meat and eggs.

A viral disease transmitted from bird to bird. It can infect all birds like chickens and ducks. In rare cases, the virus can mutate so that it can be transmitted to humans.
