KOCHI: The High Court has ordered the government to publish information on the contents of the containers of the sunken cargo ship and the consequences if they leak. Details should explain how it will affect marine and coastal life. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji said that this should be done within two weeks of the petition being considered again.

The court was considering a public interest litigation filed by TN Prathapan seeking compensation for unemployed fishermen and others. The petition states that calcium carbide, oil, plastic particles, etc. from containers have spread into the sea, causing a harmful situation for the environment.

State Attorney N. Manoj Kumar said that the National Green Tribunal has taken action in the incident and that the government and the Director General of Shipping are investigating. The court, which clarified that it would not give any further directions at this stage, directed the government to publish the information available.

The petitioner alleged that the government had stopped the removal of waste that washed ashore after the ship sank. The government explained that this was not true. The court directed that the complaints be resolved through discussion.
