KOLLAM: The containers from the cargo ship that listed off in Kochi have washed ashore again in Kollam. One container was found in Karunagappally late last night and another was found again Monday morning. Three containers washed ashore in Chavara. Three were also found in Sakthikulangara Madamathoppu. One has also been found in Neendakara Altharamoodu. It is reported that eight have been found so far.
The containers were found on the Alappad shore at around 4 this morning. Containers were also found in the Neendakara Parimanam area at around 5 am. They were found open and there was nothing inside. The police and the disaster relief team reached the spot after receiving information.
The container crashed into the sea wall with a loud noise at night. The locals were the first to see it. Collector N Devidas and City Police Commissioner Kiran Narayanan reached the spot after they were informed. Since it is a residential area, people from here have been asked to go to their relatives' houses.
The MSC Elsa 3 cargo ship that sank in Kochi had a total of 643 containers. Of these, 73 were empty and 13 contained dangerous goods, including calcium carbide. All these things are clarified in a public advisory issued by the chief commissioner of customs, Thiruvananthapuram zone.
The advisory also states that calcium carbide reacts with water and releases acetylene gas. A warning was issued again yesterday not to touch any items from the cargo ship that have washed up on the shore. The disaster management authority had warned not to go near it and to immediately call 112 and report it.
