TALIPARAMBA: Valleri Mohanan (60), a CPM worker from Ariyil, who had been under treatment for a long time after being injured in an attack following the murder of Ariyil Shukoor, passed away on Friday. He died on Friday morning at AKG Hospital, Kannur. Mohanan was admitted to the hospital a few days ago after he was stung by a wasp. He was later shifted to the ICU after his condition worsened.

Ariyil Shukoor was killed on February 20, 2012, and the very next day, Mohanan, a carpenter, was attacked by a group. While he was sleeping at home, they inflicted serious injuries to his head and hand with sharp weapons, and then dragged him along with his cot to nearby bushes. The CPM alleged that Muslim League workers were behind the attack.

The attackers had also injured Mohanan’s son. After sustaining a head injury, Mohanan remained bedridden for about four years. Later, he was able to walk a little with the help of a special device fixed to his head. Eight days ago, he suffered a wasp sting, and a fall during the incident left his condition critical.

He was first admitted to Payyannur Cooperative Hospital, then shifted to Taliparamba Cooperative Hospital. Later, he was taken to AKG Hospital for an operation to replace the damaged device in his head, but he passed away before the surgery could take place. After the first attack, his family had moved to his wife Radha’s house in Perool, Mathamangalam.

The body was placed for public viewing at Pattuvam Parappool A.V. Krishnan Memorial Library. CPM State Secretary M.V. Govindan, District Secretary K.K. Ragesh, State Committee members P. Jayarajan, T.V. Rajesh, MLA M. Vijin, and Taliparamba Area Secretary K. Santosh paid their last respects. The funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. in Perool, Mathamangalam. He was the son of late Karikkan Kunjiraman and V. Kalyani.

Wife: Radha (Pariyaram Government Medical College) Children: Mithun (Collection Agent, Eramam Kuttur Cooperative Bank) and Nidhin.
