Do you have plans to install rooftop solar? You should know the change coming 

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With central assistance, huge battery storage will be installed at four places in the state to store the power generated through rooftop solar during the day and use at night. The project is estimated to cost Rs 900 crore, of which Rs 270 crore is central assistance. The remaining amount will be borne by the contractor NHPC. KSEB has no liability. The project will be completed before summer next year.

KSEB can buy electricity at the rate of Rs 4.61 per unit. It will be installed at Sreekandapuram in Alappuzha, Pothencode in Thiruvananthapuram, Areekode in Malappuram and Mulleria in Kasaragod.

KSEB has to pay up to Rs 12 per unit to buy electricity from outside between 6 pm and 11 pm. Since it is not possible to provide such expensive electricity to rooftop solar consumers at a lower price, KSEB has taken a stand that they should prepare their own battery storage system. This central project is a solution to this.

This is the first project in the country that can provide electricity for four hours continuously or intermittently. A twelve-year operating contract with the company. The company will already receive the investment and profit. Then it should be handed over to KSEB.

The Battery Energy Storage System, known as BESS, is a system for storing cheap electricity in large-capacity batteries during the day and making it available during the evening peak hours.

The BESS is being installed, which can store 125 MW at a time and distribute 500 MW due to its four-hour operating duration.

On average, KSEB charges Rs. 5.68 per unit from the public in various slabs.

KSEB pays Rs. 3.26 per unit to rooftop solar producers. It will continue to pay that. It will be purchased from the storage company for Rs. 4.61.
