THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 1375 new wards have been formed in 941 gram panchayats in Kerala. There were 15962 wards, which has increased to 17337. The final notification of ward division was released today.
The largest number of new wards were created in Malappuram district, 223 wards. The least number was in Wayanad district, 37. Since the census was not conducted in 2021, the wards were divided based on the population data of 2011.
The final notification regarding ward division in the 87 municipalities and six corporations in the state will be issued by the end of this month. The ward division will be considered in the upcoming local government elections. The ward arrangement involving block panchayats and district panchayats is yet to be completed. The notification for ward arrangement of block panchayats will be issued on the 27th. The new local government committees are expected to come into existence in December this year.
