KOLLAM: Muhammad bin Farooq, who started a 'business' by selling ornamental fish bought for five rupees at a profit of two rupees while studying in the seventh standard, now has a monthly income of two lakh rupees!

He was so fascinated with fish that he chose it for his research. Muhammad bin Farooq (28) of Oachira Varavila HA Mansil is a research student in fisheries science.

When Muhammad was a child, his mother Salina used to buy him decorative fish along with toys. As he grew up, his love for fish increased. He brought fish from shops and streams and started rearing them. Muhammad started breeding fish when he was in 8th standard and expanded his business along with his studies.

In 2018, a 7,500 sq. ft. hatchery was started adjacent to the house. Two years ago another hatchery was started in 12,000 square feet. Muhammad's hatchery has 43 different ornamental fish, including Japanese koi, angels, goldfish, geophagus, tetra, uaru and other rare species. Species for breeding are brought from Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

Muhammad Farooq's monthly expenses are close to one lakh. Despite being busy with research, Mohammad is not ready to compromise on fish farming. When he is not at home, his mother takes care of the business. Preparations are being made to prepare a lab along with the hatchery.

Muhammad completed his MSc in Industrial Fisheries from CUSAT and completed his PG Diploma in Ornamental Aquaculture. Muhammad is the director of Grobest Aquaculture and Hatcheries. Father: Farooq. Wife: Dr Jeffrina.

Many Awards

Muhammad is the winner of this year's Central and State Govt.'s award for the best ornamental fish farmer. Muhammad has received many accolades including the KUFOS 2023 Award for Best Fisheries Startup.

Aquaculture farming is something to be done carefully. There can be both profit and loss. It is love rather than business that brought me to this field. Family support is also huge
