KANNUR: Seventeen-year-old Ayona Monson, who was declared brain-dead after falling from a school building, gave new life to five people through organ donation. Her kidneys, liver and corneas were donated. The organ retrieval surgery was conducted at Aster MIMS Hospital in Kannur.

One kidney was transplanted to a patient at Aster MIMS Hospital in Kozhikode, while the other kidney was given to a patient at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The liver was donated to a patient at Meitra Hospital in Kozhikode. The corneas were allocated to patients at Thalassery District Hospital.

Ayona Monson was a Plus Two student of Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Payyavur, in Kannur district. She was a native of Koshavanvayal, Kattiyankal house. On the morning of the 12th, she reportedly jumped from the upper floor of the school building. She was seriously injured and was first taken to Payyavur Hospital and later shifted to Aster MIMS Hospital in Kannur. She was declared brain-dead on the night of the 14th. Following this, her family consented to organ donation.

Ayona was known to be a bright student. She had told her family that she was going to school for a lab examination. It is reported that she was under emotional stress due to her mother’s plans to go abroad. Her parents are K M Monson and Anita. She is survived by her siblings Martin Monson and Angel Monson.

After completing legal procedures, the body was handed over to the family. The mortal remains will be kept at her house in Koshavanvayal this morning, and from 11 am they will be kept for public viewing at St Francis Assisi Sunday School Hall. The funeral service will later be held at Tirur St Francis Assisi Knanaya Catholic Church.

Organ transported by commercial flight
Ayona’s kidney was transported to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on an IndiGo commercial flight. This is the first time in the state that an organ has been transported from one district to another using a commercial airline. Considering the long distance between Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram, air travel was chosen to ensure timely delivery. The entire process was coordinated by K-SOTTO.
