THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A discussion has arisen again over the electric buses given to KSRTC by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The BJP governing body of the corporation has turned against buses supposed to operate within the municipal limits operating outside the city.
Mayor V V Rajesh had told the media yesterday that steps would be taken to get the e-buses back in the city. He also said that the unilateral stand taken by KSRTC, contrary to the agreement with the corporation, cannot be accepted.
The mayor clarified that they will check whether the 113 electric buses given to the corporation by the central government as part of the Smart City project are operating outside the city limits and that it is their responsibility to look at the profit and loss of KSRTC.
The city circular buses were started by connecting offices, hospitals, tourist centers, etc., including places where there was no public transport system. The e-bus started running at a fare of Rs 10. There were 113 electric buses in the city circular. An agreement had been made with the KSRTC Corporation that these buses should operate within the city itself. As part of the reforms of Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar, the buses started operating to other places in violation of this agreement.
The routes were designed for the City Circular by scientifically studying the city's transportation needs. The small e-buses are suitable for the narrow roads of the capital city. The name and fares were changed when they started operating outside the city. The bus service outside the city is operated under the name city fast.
